Hungary is the fourth country in the EU with most hepatitis cases

The latest statistics by the international statistics office Eurostat reported awful news about Hungary. The country is the fourth out of 27 EU countries where most people die because of hepatitis infection.

Pénzcentrum reported that in 2017 out of 4 million hepatitis infections 5,500 fatal incidents were registered by healthcare institutions. The same number of men and women get infected, and most people over 65-year-old die in the disease. The situation is the worst in Italy where out of one million people 32 gets infected by hepatitis each year, Latvia is the second and Austria is the third.

In Hungary, out of one million residents, 16 died in 2017.

The Netherlands, Slovenia and Finland registered the least infections three years ago. The peak of hepatitis happened in 2014 in Hungary when 1812 residents died. In 1997, this number was 1774 while in 2018 only 482, which means that since the peak the number of people diagnosed with hepatitis has been decreasing. 

According to the World Health Organisation, every child under five-year-old are vaccinated against the B type Hepatitis infection but still, the active cases nearly reach 250 million.

In Hungary, approximately 50,000 residents live with the disease but do not show symptoms. Despite its dangers on the human body, the hepatitis infection can be cured, but the healing process is long, tiring and can result in other chronic illnesses.

Society Cancer and respiratory diseases still take most lives in Hungary

In most of the EU countries, the main reason for fatal incidents is respiratory problems, except for Denmark, Ireland, France, and the Netherlands where cancer is the number one reason. In Hungary, every second fatal incident at hospitals is connected to respiratory problems while every fourth to cancer.
